With the release of our new issue of the Bard, I’ve been thinking more about the role that race plays in our interactions. Often, we assume that the people who get the majority of the benefit from racial and gendered stereotypes are white men; however, as this article describes, STEM fields are also mine fields of positive stereotypes regarding Asians, as well. As I have discussed in the past, it is important for people of every variety to be aware of the privileges they have inherent to their beings. And no, this doesn’t mean people should feel guilty for being who they are, but perhaps as a person builds awareness, he or she can go out and find ways to elevate the conditions of those who are less fortunate by birth than they.
Just a thought.
